How to Have a Stress-Free Valentine’s Day

by Karen Alexander, Sunshima guest blog writer

Valentine’s Day can be fun with grand romantic gestures or even just doing something silly together that only the two of you understand. And as well as remembering the Valentine Days that went really well, there are of course the disappointments. So how can you make this Valentine’s stress free and enjoyable.

Check Expectations

Discuss with your partner how you would like to celebrate the day. Keep the conversation light, at this point you’re checking expectations, especially if this is a new relationship. You might prefer to keep it lowkey while they could be up for the full 3 course Valentine’s special at a fancy restaurant. This way you both have an idea of what the other expects and can decide what to do taking this into account.

Plan

If you don’t want to be one of those people who are trawling the supermarkets/petrol stations on the evening of the 13th for the last of the Valentine goodies, then plan to get them earlier. There will be more choice and of course you can always go on online but you will need to allow time for deliveries. And of course, if you plan to go out to a restaurant or any kind of Valentine event, book it as soon as possible.

Stick to a Budget

We have all heard about the cost-of-living crisis, so if your finances are a bit stretched this year, do what you can afford and avoid the stress of overspending. You can make something if you are creative or do something thoughtful like making their favourite dessert or giving them a personal massage with all  the trimmings, lights dimmed, candles lit.  Just knowing that you have thought of them and wanted to do something special will be more than enough.

Be Different

You don’t have to limit yourself to traditional Valentine activities, it is great for couples to discover new things together. Check what free things are happening in your area. Is there something you have been wanting to try but you’ve always been too busy? Then this could be the time to try it. Every couple is unique so make your Valentines as special as you are and don’t feel you have to fit in with society’s norms.

Forget perfectionism!

This one can be difficult especially when celebs and even some of your friends online are posting their perfect Valentine celebrations. For a start you have no idea what went into creating the perfect picture and you are in competition with no one. I find that some of the best times and best stories come from when things have not gone fully to plan. They create memories that only you two share and last longer.

Valentine’s day should not be stressful but a celebration where you get to make time for each other and if you want to go large then go for it but if you prefer to chill at home watching some rom com with a Valentine meal deal then enjoy that too. And of course, if you are not part of a couple then don’t forget to show yourself some self-love this year.  Happy stress-free Valentine’s to you all!
