Can you believe that winter has officially arrived, especially when it feels like only yesterday, we were enjoying gelati and basking in the sunshine. And while there is the joy of the holidays, winter also brings long, dark days and the undeniable desire to just stay under the duvet. However, winter does not have to be the season we just have to “get through”, instead by applying a few small, intentional changes into your daily routine, you can stop just surviving the season and genuinely start to enjoy its unique comfort and tranquillity. We hope that these seven simple tips will help you go from enduring the dark to embracing the cosy.
1. Seek Out the Light
Our bodies are regulated by circadian rhythms, and the lack of morning light in winter messes with this fundamental system. Getting light exposure first thing is the single most important step you can take to boost mood and energy. Aim to get 10 minutes of natural light within an hour of waking up. This could mean drinking your coffee next to a bright window, or better yet, going into the garden. If outdoor time is impossible, invest in a good light therapy lamp and use it while you eat breakfast.
2. Embrace Hygge the art of Cosiness
Hygge is the Danish concept of cosy contentment and wellbeing through enjoying simple things. So, since you will be spending more time inside, why not make your home cosy with soft textures and warm lighting. Light a scented candle, drape a plush throw blanket over your sofa, and wear the softest socks you own. These simple changes can completely change the atmosphere of your home, and therefore, your mood.
3. Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down
One of the greatest struggles of winter is feeling like you should maintain summer level productivity. Our energy naturally dips in winter and fighting this natural slowdown is often the source of winter burnout. Instead use winter as a time for inward focus, reflection, and recharging. Don’t feel guilty about taking an afternoon nap, reading a novel instead of tackling a massive project, or simply spending a quiet weekend at home. This rest is not lazy, it’s necessary.
4. Keep Your Body Moving
This might seem the opposite of the above tip, but we are not talking about Bootcamp here, just small activities that will get you moving, such as a ten minute stretch, a walk around your area in a warm coat, or a YouTube workout you can do in pyjama bottoms. The goal isn’t to “stick to a routine” or transform your fitness. It’s just to give your body a little nudge so your mood gets the benefits. Think gentle, consistent, and kind.
5. Embrace Warming, Nourishing Foods
Winter food can be both comforting and nourishing, which is the dream team. Warm breakfasts like porridge or eggs help stabilise your energy. While soups, stews and roasted veggies, are full of mood-supporting nutrients without any fuss. Also don’t forget to stay hydrated, even though you might not feel as thirsty, your body and brain will thank you for it.
6. Find Beauty in the Bleak
Instead of focusing on what winter lacks such as warmth and light, try to appreciate what it offers like quiet, crisp air, beautiful frost patterns, and the majesty of a dark, starry sky. Look out for dramatic sunsets with their vibrant pinks, oranges, and purples, the stark beauty of a tree without it’s leaves and spiderwebs coated in fine, crystalline ice. Appreciating these wonders will change your emotional response to the season.
7. Stay Connected
Isolation is one of the quickest ways to let the winter blues creep in. While the urge to hibernate is strong, human interaction is a powerful mood booster. Try to keep a gentle level of connection such as coffee with a friend, a walk and talk phone call, or a weekly check in with someone who makes you laugh. It doesn’t have to be loads, just little moments to help you remember that you’re not doing life alone.
Winter doesn’t have to feel like something you’re just enduring. With a few simple habits and a bit of kindness toward yourself, these months can actually feel grounding, comforting, and surprisingly joyful. You don’t have to do all seven tips perfectly just pick the ones that feel easy and start there. After all, the small things really do add up.
Have an amazing winter ❄️
