Your Essential Summer Bucket List

by Sunshima Team

We seem to be racing through 2024 with June heralding the official start of Summer. This is the season that we at Sunshima particularly enjoy where thanks to the longer days and warmer weather, there is an abundance of activities to enjoy whether you prefer being active or simply want to relax. Here is our list of ten essential summer activities that we hope will ensure the season is filled with fun, relaxation, and adventure.

1. Hit the Beach

What is more summer, than a day at the beach. Pack your favourite book, sunscreen, and a big umbrella. Then spend the day lounging on the sand, listening to the waves, and soaking up the sun (remember to reapply sunscreen regularly throughout the day). For a more relaxing experience, go during a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.

And for those who prefer a bit more activity, the beach offers plenty of options. Try paddleboarding, beach volleyball, cricket, boules or even fly a kite.  These activities not only keep you active but will also create great memories.

2. Go Hiking

Explore local trails or venture out to a national park for a day of hiking. It’s a great way to connect with nature, get some exercise, and enjoy breathtaking views. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and take a picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot.  AllTrails will help you find routes and you can use it for free or take out a paid subscription for additional features.

3. Host a BBQ

Get friends and family together for a classic summer barbecue. Fire up the grill and enjoy a leisurely day of good food, games, and laughter. To ease the burden on you, make it potluck.  Attendees will love bringing their favourite dishes and everyone will enjoy the variety of dishes.

4. Go to an Outdoor Concert or Festival

Summer is the season of outdoor concerts and festivals. As well as the bigger events you should also be able to find something more local. Just check what is happening in your area and you may be surprised at the choice with something to suit everyone, whether you want to relax under the stars with a picnic blanket listening to something soothing or prefer to dance the night away.  There are also festivals around food, activities and or course wellness. So, choose what suits you and enjoy!

5. Take a Road Trip

Plan a road trip to explore new places and enjoy the freedom of the open road. Choose a scenic route, make a killer playlist, and take your time exploring charming small towns, amazing vistas, and of course hidden gems along the way.

And if you want to be more adventurous, add stops for hiking, kayaking, or cycling. This balance of relaxation and activity will make for a well-rounded holiday experience.

6. Camp Under the Stars

Camping is a perfect summer activity that combines relaxation with adventure. A website like Pitchup can help you find the perfect location, then all you need to do is set up camp, relax by the campfire, and gaze at the stars. A relaxing way to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature.

During the day, you can go for a hike, swim in a nearby lake, or try fishing. These activities provide a perfect blend of exercise and fun in the great outdoors.

7. Visit a Farmer’s Market

Support local farmers by going to a local farmer’s market where you will be able to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, sample fresh produce, and pick up some locally made goods. What a relaxing way to start the day!

8. Try a New Water Sport

Summer is the ideal time to try out new water sports. Whether it’s surfing, wakeboarding, or kayaking, there is after all something exhilarating about being on the water. Plus, many places offer lessons for beginners, so there really is no excuse for some water adventures.

9. Read a Book in a Hammock

Find a quiet spot, set up a hammock, and lose yourself in a good book. This simple pleasure is one of the best ways to unwind and enjoy a peaceful summer afternoon. Check out the internet for self-standing hammock bargains and start relaxing!

10. Explore Your City

Become a tourist in your own city. Visit museums, go on a walking tour, or explore neighbourhoods you haven’t been to before. It’s a great way to see your hometown in a new light and discover hidden treasures.  Then complete your tourist day with a visit to a local café or park, where you can sit back, relax, and watch the world go by.

Creating a summer bucket list with a mix of active and relaxing activities ensures you will have a season full of memorable experiences, whether you are exploring the great outdoors or enjoying a quiet moment in a hammock.  So, grab your sunscreen, gather your friends and family, and start checking off these must-do summer activities!
