The Best Things about the Summer

by Lauren Hodges and Sunshima Team

At last Summer has arrived. The sun is already out by 5.30am and it’s even humid! This year the worst of the pandemic is behind us and we can look forward to summer get togethers, al fresco dining and holidays. So, what are the best things about the summer we can enjoy?

The Sun

This may seem obvious but waking up to a sunny day just makes you feel better, even if it is cold, a day filled with sunshine makes you feel more optimistic and lighter. Enjoy this season with some sunbathing in the garden or lazing on the warm sand at your favourite beach. This enjoyable activity will increase your serotonin making you feel happy and relaxed.

The Clothes

Summer is the ideal time to bring out the colours in your wardrobe.  Take your inspiration from the Mediterranean where they know how to dress with flair and drama.  Think prints, big sunglasses, wide summer hats and of course plenty of colour.  And if you don’t own any, now’s the perfect time to invest in a few pairs of shorts and fun prints.  Check out some charity shops to find some bargains and be climate friendly!

Summer Day Trips

What is better than a summer day trip? The excitement of planning where to go and then preparing what to take.  For many a trip to the beach is their first choice, but if you don’t live near the sea, going to a local attraction is equally beneficial. Take a picnic and a blanket, then relax. Or of course there are always outdoor games especially if you have little ones to entertain. Whatever you do, there are endless opportunities for fun in the sun.

Summer Holidays

This year may be the first time in two years many of us are considering going abroad.  Much of the world has reopened and they are keen to welcome back visitors. Whether you decide to venture overseas or discover new areas in your home country.  A summer holiday offers you the chance to unwind, explore and take a break from your usual life. You can be daring and have little adventures like a bike ride or hike.  You can also completely relax and do nothing more exerting than a walk to the beach. This is your summer holiday and the only person you need to please is yourself!

Summer Food

Many of us think of Barbeques when we think of summer food, one of the first signs that the hot season has arrived is the first barbeque after all. And in summer our food, like our clothes, gets more colourful with healthy salads and fruit. Comforting stews can wait, now’s the time for fresh fruit and vegetables. Plus a lot of summer recipes require less cooking which can’t be a bad thing especially right now!

Summer Events

This summer sees the return of summer events and we are very ready for some fun.  From events organised by your local council to big festivals such as Glastonbury, there is something for most people and most budgets. Plus, the variety of events from music to culture, art, food, or dance means you should be able to find something of interest. Summer events give us the opportunity for a crowd experience, with other likeminded people.  And who knows what might happen, many romances and friendships have been made at a summer event. Just think of what memories you will have!

Make the most of this summer, as you can see there is much to do and these glorious months are meant to be enjoyed! So, get out there and have fun!
