Making Father’s Day Special

by Karen Alexander, Sunshima guest blog writer

With Father’s Day just over 2 weeks away, now is the time to start thinking about how you want to celebrate the Father figure in your life. Summer is finally here and with the easing of lockdown restrictions you can explore how to make Father’s Day 2021 extra special.  Here’s a look at what you can do, whether it’s going out, staying in, doing something cheap but thoughtful or splashing out on something big. There’s something on our list to make any Dad feel loved!

Activity Dad

If local restrictions and weather allow, get active with a day’s hike or bike ride.  Or how about a morning walk, take a hot drink and enjoy spending time just being together. And if the weather isn’t great why not find an at-home workout that you could both do in the front room? You could even make this a family event!

Foodie Dad

The options here are endless. Who doesn’t love breakfast in bed and it can be tailored with healthy options (avocado, fresh tomatoes and bacon on toast) to a naughty Full English.  How about brunch? You could take your Dad to a favourite local café or you stay at home and create your own café experience. For the at home option you could make a handwritten menu with decorations and flowers along with a note expressing your gratitude for all the ways your Dad has been there for you.  This selection of easy recipes should help inspire you. And if the weather is good you could pack a hamper with your Dad’s favourite eats, head to the local park and spend the afternoon relaxing, chatting or even playing a ball game.

Games Dad

If your Dad loves nothing better than getting out the board games, then organise a family game night with all the classics such as Monopoly, Cluedo or Scrabble.  And to keep the family’s competitive spirit in check, there are even collaborative board games and game experiences where the whole family plays together as a team.

Movie Dad

For Dads who enjoy the magic of film, do a movie night.  Get some popcorn, treats, drinks and his favourite movie franchise such as “The Terminator” films or perhaps catch up on a series like “The Queen’s Gambit” that he may have missed but wanted to see.

DIY Dad

And if money is tight, make a gift! Handmade gifts are personal and one of a kind. Dad will appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness.  Pinterest is great for finding gift ideas that are creative and easy to make.

Travelling Dad

Now that we can travel again you could organise a Day Trip with your Dad. Perhaps there’s a National Trust site he has been itching to visit or somewhere special in your local area. Taking a picnic or eating out somewhere nice will make it more memorable. You could also lead your own personal tour by Googling for information about the area and local landmarks.

If none of these seem right for you, you could even ask your Dad what he would like to do for Father’s Day. Whatever you decide, your Dad will appreciate that you thought of him and wanted to celebrate him. In the end for most Fathers, the most precious gift is spending quality time with their children no matter how little or big.
