Self-Care For Busy Mums – Mother’s Day Special

by Karen Alexander, Sunshima guest blog writer

It is Mother’s Day in the UK this Sunday and while motherhood is a rewarding experience, it is also very challenging.  After all being a mother is a full-time job, and it can be easy to forget about self-care when you’re juggling so many responsibilities. However, taking care of yourself is crucial for your physical and mental health, and can even help you be a better mother. Here are 7 self-care tips for busy mums:

Make sleep a priority – Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night and establish a bedtime routine that helps you wind down and relax. This could include taking a warm bath, reading a book, or practicing meditation. And if you have a young child/baby who is not sleeping throughout the night, grab a nap when they sleep, any cleaning or chores can wait!

Take breaks throughout the day – It can be easy to get caught up in the busyness of motherhood, but taking short breaks throughout the day can help you recharge and refocus. This could mean doing some stretches, or simply sitting down with a cup of tea.

Practice mindfulness – Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and can help reduce stress and anxiety. Even just a few minutes of mindfulness each day can make a big difference. You can try a mindfulness app, like Headspace or Calm, or simply focus on your breathing for a few minutes each day.

Get outside – Spending time in nature can have a positive impact on mental health and can also help boost your mood and energy levels. Even just a short walk outside can help you feel more grounded and present!

Prioritise exercise – Regular exercise is important for both physical and mental health, but it can be tough to find the time as a busy mum. Try to find ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, like going for a walk with your child (see above), doing a quick yoga routine at home, or taking a fitness class that offers childcare.

Connect with others – As a busy mum, it can be easy to feel isolated or disconnected from others. Making an effort to connect with other mums or friends can help you feel supported and understood. This could mean joining a local mum’s group, reaching out to a friend for a chat, or even just connecting on social media. You’ll be surprised by how many shared experiences you have and realise you are not alone!

Ask for help – Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Ask your partner to do their bit, after all it should not be all up you. And don’t be shy to ask a family member or friend to watch the kids for a few hours. Getting some extra support will help you feel more balanced and less overwhelmed.

Self-care is essential for busy mums and is in no way selfish. It is an important aspect of motherhood, particularly when it comes to prioritising mental health. Whether it’s getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, or simply taking a few minutes each day to focus on yourself.  Prioritising self-care will help you better manage the challenge that is motherhood, benefiting both you and your family.
