The phrases “trust your gut” or “what is your gut telling you?” refer to the importance of referring to your intuition or inner voice at moments when you are unsure about a course of action or a person.  In fact, our gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” plays a crucial role in our overall health. From digestion and nutrient absorption to immune function and even mood regulation, the gut is at the centre of many vital processes. But what exactly is gut health, and why is it so important?

What Is Gut Health?

Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms living in our digestive tract. This community of microorganisms, known as the gut microbiome, includes trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. While the idea of bacteria in our bodies might sound alarming, many of these microorganisms are beneficial. They help with digestion, protect against harmful pathogens, and produce vitamins and other essential nutrients.

Drinking plenty of water supports digestion and the lining of the intestines, promoting a healthy gut environment.
