It’s April! And while it seems like only yesterday it was Christmas. April has arrived and with it; increased sunshine, spring showers, and Earth Day! This year let’s celebrate our amazing planet by getting fit in a way that’s kind to the environment with eco-workouts and sustainable living hacks, that will make us feel good both inside and out.
Eco-Workouts: Ditch the Gym, Embrace the Outdoors
Mother Nature is the ultimate free gym, with fresh air, and stunning scenery. Here are some ways to work out and be eco-friendly:
- Dump the Treadmill: Swap the treadmill for a trail run or brisk walk in the park. The sunshine boosts your mood, increases your levels of Vitamin D, and exploring new paths keeps things exciting.
- Park Workouts: Head to your local park for a bodyweight workout session. Use benches for step-ups, pull-up bars for upper body exercises, and open grassy areas for lunges and squats!
- Cycle: Dust off your bicycle and hit the pavement or even better a scenic bike path. Most towns now have cycling lanes, and it is a fantastic cardio workout, (especially if you’re not keen on jogging) just don’t forget your helmet!
- Hike and Tone: Hiking is a fantastic full-body workout, engaging your legs, core, and even your upper body on uneven terrain. Pack some light weights in your backpack for an extra challenge at the top of your hike with squats, lunges, or overhead presses.
Green Living Tips:
Eco-fitness goes beyond your workout. Here are some simple tips to make your fitness routine more sustainable:
- Hydration Hero: Ditch the disposable water bottles and invest in a reusable water bottle. This saves plastic waste and keeps you hydrated throughout your workout.
- Natural Light, Natural Power: If you must hit the gym, try to choose one with large windows that let in natural light. This should reduce dependence on artificial lights.
- Ditch the Car: Consider carpooling or biking to the gym whenever possible. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it can also save you money on petrol!
- Shower Power: We all love a hot shower after a workout but try to shorten your shower time. Even a minute less can save water and energy. And to go that extra mile, collect the cool water at the beginning of your shower to use for watering plants later.
Earth Day Activities for the Whole Family
You can make lasting family memories while also being eco-friendly with these activities that the family can do together:
- Plogging Power: Combine a jog or walk with picking up litter. It’s a great way to get exercise and clean up your local area.
- Community Garden Fun: Find a community garden in your area and volunteer your time. It’s a fantastic way to learn about sustainable gardening, get some exercise, and give back to your community.
Remember, every little bit counts! By incorporating these eco-friendly practices into your routine, you’re making a positive impact on the planet while keeping yourself healthy and happy. So lace up your trainers, grab your reusable water bottle, and get ready to celebrate Earth Day 2024!
