Another year has sped by and Christmas is upon us once again, and while this is indeed a magical time of year with lights and decorations everywhere, it can also be very stressful and the pressure to have the perfect day can be overwhelming. Plus, general anxiety due to rising costs adds even more stress this Christmas. Here are 5 ways you can have a stress-free Christmas and still celebrate the true meaning of the festive season.

Plan

Planning ahead means there will be less last-minute panic, so take time to look at what needs to be done and what you want to achieve for the Christmas holidays. Make a list of things you want to complete before Christmas Day and don’t be afraid to delegate whenever you can. Work on your plan in steps, ideally look at doing the bigger tasks such as cleaning, decorating your house, and Christmas shopping early. Having a plan should make you feel more in control, which will help you relax.

Set a Christmas budget

It’s easy to get carried away with your spending on Christmas decorations, treats, and gifts. There are so many alluring sales but you should focus on getting only the necessities and avoid overspending especially in the current climate. No one needs to go bankrupt after the holidays. Some ways to curb your spending include planning a simple dinner menu with affordable ingredients, buying gifts for the people you are close to instead of everyone you know, and making use of Christmas discounts.

Be charitable

This Christmas will be tough for more people. Increasing costs mean many will struggle paying for necessities and food banks record an increase of 52% in food parcels distributed between 1 April 2022 and 30 September 2022 compared to the same period in 2019. If you are able to, please give what you can, many big supermarkets already have collection points for food and toys. Remember every little bit counts and you will feel better knowing that you helped to spread joy and love to people who need it the most.

Remember to relax

Remember to relax and meditate. It’s an important practice that should be a staple throughout the year but especially during hectic Christmas preparations. No matter how jampacked your day may get, try to find at least 5 minutes to simply slow down, breathe and gather your thoughts. Not only will it help you maintain a clear head, but it will help you reduce anxiety and prevent burnout!

Remember the true meaning of Christmas

It’s easy to forget the true meaning of Christmas because it has become so commercialised. Don’t feel bad if your Christmas décor isn’t looking like a movie set or if you can’t buy designer gifts for your friends and family. The main focus should be on gratitude and love, especially after the last 2 years. And be thankful that you and your loved ones are safe, healthy, and able to be together.

Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year, but it also can be one of the most stressful. We hope that this Christmas, you feel better prepared to enjoy the festivities and more importantly treasure the time spent with your loved ones. Happy Holidays!
