Staying Healthy This Autumn

by Anastasia Fermin, Sunshima blog writer

As autumn approaches, the air is getting cooler. With the Covid- 19 pandemic still ongoing, it’s essential to make staying healthy this autumn a major priority. The colder weather also marks the start of the flu season. As it gets colder, you may also feel less motivated to be active and prefer to stay indoors curled up in your blanket. While taking some time to relax is needed, you should try to maintain some balance.

Here are some tips to help you keep up healthy habits during the autumn:

Take walks

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get some exercise in, and if you’re up to it, upgrade to a jog. It burns a lot of calories, helps you to lose weight and it will certainly keep you warm. Walk with your partner, a friend or just walk your dog. Sticking to a routine will help you to stay on track. You can also walk trails or hike to make it more exciting.

Ride a bike

Riding a bike is a form of exercise that can also be very mentally soothing. Take a ride around your town, the park or somewhere scenic to clear your head and enjoy the natural beauty of autumn. If you can’t ride a bike, then it’s a great time to learn and try something new.

Gardening

During autumn, leaves fall from the trees. One chore guaranteed to make you sweat is raking up leaves. Clean your garden and also find projects to do around the house that can keep you active and moving.

Workout at home

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, it may be difficult to get to the gym.  It is also in your best interest to avoid too many public gatherings or crowds.  You can safely adopt a home workout routine by doing online classes, using YouTube, or practicing yoga and bodyweight exercises.

Decrease Stress

2020 has been a roller coaster of a year to date. The global pandemic alone is a source of high stress and anxiety. Many people are filled with fear, uncertainty, financial troubles and dealing with the ‘new normal’ among many other issues. You can be the fittest person in the world but being under constant stress and worry can negatively impact your health. Try to meditate, practice self-care and seek counselling if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Eat Healthily

If you’re unable to get a lot of exercise done, at least try to eat healthily. Avoid foods that cause inflammation and switch to healthier options. Healthy eating assists in boosting your immunity, helps with weight loss goals and makes you feel more energetic. You can also take vitamins to supplement your diet and avoid processed foods, excessive amounts of sugar and fast foods.

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year. Despite the hard and uncertain times, try to make the best of it and enjoy the season. Keep your health a number one priority, keep safe and continue to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
